Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds!

The wonder of discovery! I have the pleasure and honour of working with amazing children and families in the art of education and learning. Over many years I have brought stories to children, here I will share one of many. Sharing the story of “Snow White and Rose Red” a young child of seven in my class attentively listens (the other children even though they have heard this story previously also lend their ear to hear this delightful tale). While he is listening his delicate little fingers work intently on trying to soften a piece of beeswax. He sighs, saying “Ms. Kassandra its not working'” I encourage him to patiently continue and let him feel the warmth in my hands to allow the beeswax to become more supple to create a model form our story. In this story we hear of the bear and how he comes during winter to the door of Rose Red and Snow White with their kind Mother who allows the bear to warm himself by the fire. We hear about the cruddy gnome stealing and hiding treasures. While the child works on his beeswax, his eyes grow wide , and tiny eruptions of laughter happen throughout the story. Later we draw the picture together , Rose Red holding her arms out to the Bear. The Bear is drawn with the shape of ‘B’ not telling the child this, allowing his imagination and sense of wonder to make this discovery. Later we work on writing the letter ‘B’, his eyes grow wide and he says, “OH! the Bear is shaped in a B too! As a child hears a story, that story presents the opportunity to fan the flames of enthusiasm and wonder!

At the end of a day filled with moments of enthusiasm, wonder and connection, the children reverently stand in a circle and we recite our closing verse;
Our work is done, our day has passed, we’ll go our separate ways
And I will hold so tight and fast what I have learned today
I’ve given with my heart and mind the effort that it needs
And I will strive in me to find,
Good thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds!

Why am I sharing this on thestarspeak.com? Zarathustra brought forth this three-fold path Good thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds as the center of faith. By thinking good thoughts, one is moved to speak good words, and this leads to good deeds. Zoroastrians believe that after life on Earth, the immortal human soul is judged by God as to whether it did more good deeds than evil during its lifetime. Immortal souls that balance in favour of good over evil go to what Zarathustra referred to simply as the “best existence” – or heaven – and those immortal souls that balance in favour of evil go to the “worst existence” – or hell, and remain there until the end of time. The most important thing about Zoroastrianism is the dedication to ethical and moral excellence.

Rudolph Steiner ties this all together in this writing; “Now behind the world of the senses, in the ordered grouping of the stars, Zarathustra perceived a symbolic writing in cosmic space. Just as we have a written alphabet, so Zarathustra saw in the starry worlds of space, a kind of Alphabet of the spiritual worlds, a language through which they became articulate. Thus arose the science of penetrating into the spiritual world and of reading and interpreting the constellations. He knew too, how to decipher the signs in which the Cosmic Spirits inscribe their activities into space. Their language is the grouping and movement of the stars. Zarathustra and his disciples saw that Ahura Mazdao creates and manifests by describing an apparent circle in the heavens, in the sense of our Astronomy, and this circle was for them the outward sign of the way in which Ormuzd manifested his activity to man. Zarathustra showed — and this is a most important point — that the Zodiac is a line which returns on itself, forming a circle as the expression of the rotation of Time. In the highest sense, he taught that while one branch of Time goes forward into the future, the other turns backwards into the past. Zaruana Akarana, the self-contained line of Time, the circle described by Ormuzd, the Spirit of Light, is what was later called the Zodiac. This is the expression of the spiritual activity of Ormuzd. The course of the Sun through the Zodiac is the expression of the activity of Ormuzd. The Zodiac is the expression of Zaruana Akarana. Zaruana Akarana and Zodiac are one and the same word, like Ormuzd and Ahura Mazdao.
